Oak

"Wood is at the heart of what I do. It cannot be synthesised from plastics; it is warm to the touch and each species has its own aroma when cut. To work it is to pay attention to all of it's foibles all at once, like listening to its life story at any one moment in order to cut the fibres cleanly and show-off of its beautiful grain.

I use oak for its durability, warm colour, and timeless beauty. Revered throughout history, it carries stories of tradition and mythical resilience - the perfect partner for a Contour Box.

Here in Sussex I am spoiled for choice over where I source my timber. Each merchant having its own qualities but depending on availability I use oak that is certified 'Grown in Britain' or FSC certified oak from France or Germany."

Sustainability

"By definition creating small wooden objects uses only a small amount of timber with minimal waste - and since Contour Boxes are designed to last many lifetimes - this has very little environmental impact.

However to pay tribute to this amazing resource it is important to me to play a role in its regeneration. To that end, via a tree planting scheme a tree is planted for each Contour Box made."

Oil finishing

Preferring not to rely on plastic lacquers Tom uses finishes made from natural oils. These can easily be repaired or replenished to prolong the lifetime of each box.

Unique hinge design

Wood breathes. Seasonally, we get movement as it absorbs or releases moisture. This is mitigated by selecting the right cut of wood from the tree and the use of specially designed hinges which not only allows movement but lets this happen at the back of the box thereby retaining a flush fit at the front.

Wool fabric lining

Bespoke boxes are lined with natural, durable, fine wool fabrics which subtly echo the essence of the landscapes Contour Boxes represent. For a personal touch you can select a lining colour of your choice, ensuring a truly unique and refined finish.
